Japanese Mountain House Lantern, c. 1900
1/4
Japanese Mountain House Lantern, c. 1900
$650.00

Early 20th century Japanese iron lantern with hand-twisted wire mesh and a solid hardwood handle.

Originally used in rural homes and temple grounds, this piece now feels at home in an entryway, near a hearth, or hanging on the front porch. The iron has aged naturally over decades, developing a deep rusted patina that speaks to time and use. The mesh is irregular and entirely hand-formed.

Inside, an iron plate features a central spike to hold candles securely in place. While traditionally used with Japanese wax candles, it can accommodate a variety of candle styles, including tapers or pillar candles. Includes one traditional red Japanese candle.

Condition: Good antique condition consistent with age. The iron shows surface oxidation throughout, with heavier rusting on the interior plate. The wire mesh is intact. The hinge opens and closes properly.

Dimensions: 8"W x 24"H (with handle extended)
